These famous words from the Apollo 13 mission rang true for us as our intial flight to Houston was delayed by two hours. The text of an email we sent to family follows:
Well day 1 out of the year has been fun. Here we are enjoying the lovely Holiday Inn at the Houston airport where it's 40 degrees F and raining or sleeting! Yes we got delayed. Our flight from Calgary was 2hrs late and our Guatemala connecting flight pulled out a few minutes before we arrived. (Why can't they hold a plane for us like they do for everyone else when we're the ones having to wait??). Anyway, we missed our connection, but it's not a bad thing all things considered. Continental was unbelievably efficient with this whole thing. When we got off the plane we went to the desk right there where they had our hotel voucher and boarding passes for our Guatemala flight tomorrow at 9:30 am, arriving in Guat City at 12:30 noon. We were on our way in two minutes, not 2 hours like the last time we were delayed overnight in Phoenix. So, we get to arrive in the day time and have one less day in Guat City...maybe a good thing! AND, Continental has upgraded us to 1st class for the flight tomorrow. We were pretty bagged when we got here, so it was pretty good thing all in all....we would have been dead after another long flight, customs, etc.
So, here we are in Guatemala City where we have had two days touring museums and walking around the old town, dodging the noisy, fune-spuing "chicken buses". We are off to Puerto Barrios in a few minutes which is on the Caribbean coast to a nice resort for a week. A five hour bus ride...hopefully with no banditos along the way! G.City is surprisingly cool at night though the sun is warm.
More soon.
